Pregnancy is a very beautiful feeling, but during this journey women have to experience many physical changes. At the same time, many unusual changes occur in the vagina, which are completely normal and women should be prepared for them during pregnancy. Many women are not aware of this, if you are also one of them, then this article is for you. If you are pregnant, or thinking of conceiving, then definitely understand this.

To get more information on this topic, Health Shots spoke to Aastha Dayal, Obstetrician and Gynecologist at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram. The doctor has told some common changes that occur during pregnancy. So let’s know about this (vaginal changes in pregnancy).

These 5 changes can be seen in the vagina during pregnancy (vaginal changes in pregnancy)

According to Aastha Dayal, “Due to hormonal changes and increased blood flow, women often experience a number of changes in the vaginal area during pregnancy.” Common changes may include the following:

1. Change in color

During pregnancy, the natural color of the vagina may appear darker than usual due to increased blood flow to the pelvic area. The skin may turn red or purple due to the expansion of blood vessels and increased blood circulation. This change is usually gradual. But some women may notice more darkening around their vagina than others.

This is a normal body response to pregnancy hormones and increased blood volume, and it usually goes away as hormone levels return to normal after delivery. Share any concerns about skin changes or discomfort with your doctor for support and reassurance.

2. Increase in vaginal discharge

Leucorrhoea is the term used to describe increased vaginal discharge during pregnancy. The discharge may be thin, milky or slightly bloody. This discharge helps maintain a healthy balance by cleansing the vagina of germs and dead cells, thus reducing your risk of infections.

This is a normal response to hormonal changes, which cause more blood to flow into the vaginal area. However, if the discharge changes in substance or colour (green or yellow), or is accompanied by burning, itching or odour, it is important to see a doctor. These changes may be a sign of infection.

3. Sensitivity increases

During pregnancy, increased blood flow to the vaginal area can cause the tissues to swell. This increased blood supply makes your pubic area more sensitive, making the vaginal area more responsive to touch and stimulation. These changes are normal physical responses to pregnancy hormones and usually resolve after the baby is born.

4. The biome of the vagina can be different every time

According to Dr. Aastha Dayal, “During pregnancy, some women may feel dryness, while other women feel more lubrication.” This means that their vagina remains wet most of the time. Due to which some women feel irritation. On the other hand, if the vagina is dry, then in this situation the risk of infection and itching increases.

5. You may have visible veins

Veins in the vaginal area may become more noticeable (veins may appear prominent) during pregnancy due to increased blood flow to the pelvic region. The growing uterus puts pressure on the veins in the pelvic region, so this is equivalent to varicose veins, which can develop in the legs during pregnancy.

Although it is mostly harmless, it can sometimes cause discomfort during pregnancy. If you feel any of this, consult your doctor.
