Uttarakhand Police is investigating suspicious claims of a youth who was “reunited” with two different families (one in Ghaziabad and the other in Dehradun) within a span of 5 months. He claimed to be their long-lost son, who had been kidnapped. The case relates to Monu Sharma alias Bhim Singh who has made similar claims in Dehradun and Ghaziabad that he was abducted as a child and was forced to live as a bonded laborer in Rajasthan.
According to police sources, the man recently approached a police station in Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh and claimed that he was kidnapped 31 years ago when he was only eight years old. He told the police his name was Bhim Singh and said that during this time he was kept in Rajasthan. Later he was reunited with a family from Ghaziabad. As soon as this incident came to light, another similar story related to this person came to light in Dehradun also where till some time ago he was living with a different identity of Monu Sharma.
Such claim was made in Dehradun also
Police told here that about five months ago a person reached a police station in Dehradun and requested the police to find his parents. The police circulated his photograph through newspapers and other media, after which Asha Sharma, a woman who had been waiting for years, recognized him as her son and was thus reunited with her family. Police said that Monu, who had left his home a few days ago to go to Delhi for some work, never contacted his parents again.
Reunited with new family in Ghaziabad
Asha later learned that her alleged son had asked the Ghaziabad police to find his parents and has since been reunited with his “new” family there too. Asha Sharma said that ever since Monu had arrived, he used to fight with her every day, asking her to throw her married daughter’s children out of the house.
The family started getting suspicious
Asha’s husband Kapildev Sharma said that he always had doubts about whether the man was his son or not but he listened to his wife and allowed him to live in their house. He said that before going to Delhi, he had also borrowed Rs 8,000 from a person here. Kapildev said that the police team had come to his house in the morning and they told him that now they do not want the man to ever return.
Inspector Praveen Pant of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, who helped the man reunite with his “parents” in Dehradun, said the investigation into the case is still going on and if necessary, the team will also go to Ghaziabad. Pant said that when the young man came to Dehradun, he seemed a little mentally unstable. When asked about this, Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh said that the police is closely monitoring this case that came to light in Ghaziabad. He said that at present no case has been registered against that person in Dehradun.

Ghaziabad Police has also contacted their Dehradun-based counterparts and are investigating the matter further. Ghaziabad Deputy Commissioner of Police Nimish Patil said, “Discrepancies have emerged in the statements of Raju (Bhim Singh) as he could not give the name of the truck driver who dropped him in both Dehradun and Ghaziabad, thereby raising suspicion.” “Despite the inconsistencies in Raju’s statements, we are investigating the matter thoroughly to verify the authenticity of his claims,” he said.
