West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is saying that there should be no politics over the rape-murder of a trainee doctor, but she herself has made strong political statements on this matter. Saying that if Bengal catches fire, then other states will also catch fire, the fire will reach Delhi, what else is this if not politics? When the entire state is on fire, a responsible leader should not make such statements. Mamata Banerjee herself is the product of a movement. Mamata demanded an accountability from the CBI and praised the Kolkata Police, this is her second mistake. The people of Bengal are very angry with the Kolkata Police. The action taken by the Kolkata Police in the case of brutal rape and ruthless murder at R.G. Kar Hospital is where the anger among the students started.

The crime scene was tampered with, unwanted people were allowed to enter, the parents were prevented from seeing their daughter’s body for hours, the FIR was delayed, the police failed to stop the mob that entered the hospital at night to destroy evidence. The main accused roamed around on a police bike all night. All these things have angered people against the Kolkata Police. On top of that, the police beat up students, used tear gas, and water cannons. After all this, if the Chief Minister praises the policemen, how will people tolerate this? That is why people’s anger against the police has turned into anger against the government.

If Mamata Banerjee used all these things for political purposes, then BJP also took advantage of this anger of the people. The third big thing is that when the President of India Draupadi Murmu mentioned the atrocities committed against the daughter of Bengal, the people of Trinamool Congress also questioned her intentions. This is not a good tradition. The President did not comment on any one incident or any one state. She raised her voice against the atrocities being committed on women in the entire country. Just as the President is disappointed and frightened, every sister and daughter of this country has fear and a feeling of disappointment in her heart.

The President mentioned the day when girls from schools came to tie Rakhi to her on Rakshabandhan. These girls had innocently asked if they could be assured that an incident like Nirbhaya would never happen in the future. Anyone’s heart would tremble after hearing what the President said. The kind of fear, the dread that little girls have in their minds in our country, how they are worried about their safety, it is a matter of shame for all of us. President Draupadi Murmu has mentioned today that how in many places, little innocent girls are tortured and brutalised. It is necessary that such incidents should stop. (Rajat Sharma)
