Seoul: South Korea’s opposition parties have presented an impeachment motion in parliament against President Yun Suk-yeol over the issue of imposing martial law. Earlier on Wednesday, South Korea’s main opposition party had asked President Yoon Suk-yeol to resign from the post or he would have to face impeachment. On Tuesday night, Yun suddenly imposed martial law in the country. The martial law imposed by the President remained in effect for only six hours, as the National Assembly voted to reject the President’s decision.
What did the Democratic Party say?
“President Yoon Suk-yeol’s declaration of martial law is a violation of the Constitution,” the Democratic Party said in a statement. “His declaration of martial law is fundamentally invalid and a serious violation of the Constitution,” the statement said. This was a serious act of rebellion and provides perfect grounds for his impeachment.”
Ruling and opposition parties protested
Ever since martial law was implemented in the country, the ruling and opposition parties had come out against it. Many leaders of the ruling party had also called it undemocratic and unconstitutional. At the same time, the leader of the President’s own party, Han Dong-hoon, also openly criticized this decision and also took part in the voting in the Parliament. After the decision of martial law, large-scale protests started across the country.
