New Delhi: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Saturday highlighted the role of Lok Adalats as an alternative dispute redressal mechanism, saying people are “so fed up” with court cases that they simply want a settlement. Lok Adalats are forums where disputes and cases pending in courts or pre-litigation are settled or compromised amicably. No appeal can be filed against a mutually accepted settlement.
This is a matter of concern for the judges: Chandrachud
Chandrachud said on the occasion of the special Lok Adalat week in the Supreme Court, “People get so fed up with court cases that they want any compromise. Just get them out of the court. This process itself is a punishment and it is a matter of concern for all of us judges. The Chief Justice said that he got tremendous support and cooperation from everyone including the bar and the bench in organizing the Lok Adalat at every level.
Chandrachud brought justice to people’s homes
Chandrachud said that when the panels for Lok Adalat were formed, it was ensured that each panel would have two judges and two members of the bar. Chandrachud said that he really feels that even though the Supreme Court is located in Delhi, it is not the Supreme Court of Delhi. It is the Supreme Court of India. Chandrachud said, “The purpose of Lok Adalat is to take justice to the doorsteps of the people and to ensure that people feel that we are constantly present in their lives.
