When it comes to low calorie snacks, puffed rice has a special place in it. We all must have eaten Jhalmuri, Bhelpuri, puffed rice laddus made from it since childhood. Different types of chaats made from it are known by different names in many places in the country. Apart from being low in calories, they also taste very good. Apart from keeping your weight low, they also help in providing many health benefits. This is such a dish from which you can make many things.

1 puffed rice upma

To make upma you need

Puffed rice 2 cups
Onion, 1 finely chopped
Tomato, 1 finely chopped
Green chilli, 1 finely chopped
Mustard seeds 1/4 teaspoon
Cumin seeds 1/4 tsp
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
Red chilli powder 1/4 tsp
Salt to taste
Oil 1 tablespoon
Fresh coriander leaves, chopped
Lemon juice

  • Wash the puffed rice in a colander and allow it to dry.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds and let them crackle.
  • Add chopped onions and green chillies and sauté the onions for a while.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and cook until soft.
  • Add turmeric powder, red chili powder and salt. Mix well.
  • Add the drained puffed rice to the pan and mix everything together.
  • Cook on low flame for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • If desired, garnish with chopped coriander leaves and lemon juice.

2 Puffed Rice Chivda

To make chivda you need

Puffed rice 2 cups
Roasted peanuts 1/2 cup
Roasted Bengal gram dal 1/4 cup
Curry leaves 1/4 cup
Green chillies 2, chopped
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
Red chilli powder 1/4 tsp
Salt to taste
Oil 1 tablespoon

How to make puffed rice chivda

  • Heat oil in a pan and add curry leaves and green chillies. Fry for a minute.
  • Add roasted peanuts and roasted chana dal and stir for another minute
  • Add turmeric powder, red chili powder and salt. Mix well.
  • Add puffed rice and mix everything well.
  • Cook on low flame for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Let it cool and store it in an airtight container.

3 Puffed Rice Peanut Bars

To make Puffed Rice Peanut Bars you need

2 cups puffed rice (murmura)
1 cup peanuts
1 cup jaggery
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon ghee

How to make puffed rice peanut bars

  • Roast the peanuts in a pan until golden brown. Let them cool and remove the peel
  • Heat jaggery and water in a pan, stir continuously till the jaggery melts completely.
  • Add ghee to the jaggery syrup and mix well.
  • Add the roasted peanuts and puffed rice to the jaggery mixture and mix until everything is mixed well.
  • Pour the mixture into a greased tray and spread it evenly.
  • Let it cool slightly, then cut it into bars.
  • Let the bars cool completely and store them in an airtight container.
