Use natural methods to avoid cold
When Kavita Krishnamurthy was in Delhi recently for the Laxminarayan Global Music Festival, she covered herself up to keep warm. She stopped looking at herself in the mirror. She was wrapped in a coat and shawl. She didn’t mind not looking presentable. She was more concerned about her throat.
Kavita says, ‘To avoid cold, I take steam in a natural way, but sometimes I also use inhalers. Sometimes I take antibiotics. I rarely use steroids. I have decided not to take too many steroids. Because it can harm my body.’
It is very difficult to hum when the nose is blocked
For film songs, she sometimes has to sing in very high pitches. She has learnt to sing despite the odds. “It can be very difficult to hum when your nose is blocked. So before going to the studio, I pray to God that my nose doesn’t get blocked! One of those days, I got a song to sing. It was called Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Thankfully, my sinuses were under control at that time,” says Kavita Krishnamurthy. Through practice, she has been able to handle things.
Singing for the masses
She was on stage despite the severe cold because such events cannot be cancelled. You have to sing for the public. So far she has managed to sing songs despite the cold. It is all because of practice. Also, she does not talk to people much on the day of the concert. Talking can be very tiring for the voice.
Did not face discrimination in the film industry
Kavita Krishnamurthy has struggled due to health, but she never faced discrimination in the film industry. Kavita Krishnamurthy says, ‘I came as a simple middle-class girl. I was a non-glamorous person. I used to wear saree and salwar kameez without makeup. Sometimes I used to go to the studio wearing lipstick.
From RD Burman to Laxmikant-Pyarelal, they accepted me the way I was. They treated me like a daughter or sister.’ The only thing that was important for them was that I sing well.
Promotion of Indian Music
Recently, Kavita Krishnamurthy joined the Laxminarayan Global Music Festival. She says, ‘This was the 33rd year of our festival. It is called the Laxminarayan Global Music Festival. Apart from great Indian artists, we also have international artists performing at the festival every year. This time it was special, because apart from the symphony orchestra of Kazakhstan, we also had a choir from there.
As for me, I performed a piece called Bharat Symphony. It was composed by my husband, acclaimed violinist and Carnatic musician L. Subramaniam. We premiered it in London. We performed it for the first time in India at the festival.’
The aim is to bring music to the people
Actually, the concept of the festival is to spread global music and make people aware about it. It has never been a money-making event for them. It is for people who are interested in knowing about the different types of music that exist in the world. Like if it is Kazakhstan, you will get to hear their music and their artists will also get a chance to mix with Indian music. Through this, Indian music is to be mixed with all types of music of the world.

no complaints about life
Except one sister, I lost all my siblings. We have lost all our brothers. I wish I had spent more time with them. Apart from that life has been good and God has taken care of everything.
