Sex is an essential part of a romantic relationship. But some people keep thinking about sex all the time. Relationships of such people often get spoiled. Therefore, it is important to identify and overcome sex addiction.

Enjoying sex and being addicted to sex are two different things. Having a habit of sex can be a sign of high sex drive. In which even if you do not get sex, you can easily control it. Which may not be so bad for your relationship, but if you are addicted to sex, it can be bad for you. Sex addiction can disturb and negatively affect your sex life. In addiction, if you do not get sex, you can lose control over yourself.

To know why sex addiction occurs and how it can be dealt with, we spoke to gynecologist Dr. Ritu Sethi.

Understand what is sex addiction

Sex addiction, also known as hypersexual disorder, is a condition that causes a person suffering from it to become excessively preoccupied with sexual thoughts and behaviors. In some cases, they may become so preoccupied that the condition can even affect their daily functioning.

They continue to engage in sexual activities regardless of any negative consequences. Sex addiction is also sometimes referred to as compulsive sexual behavior.

Dr. Ritu Sethi explains that it is important not to mistake high libido for sex addiction. In most cases, sex addiction will disrupt a person’s day-to-day life and potentially affect personal relationships. A person suffering from this condition will spend a lot of time and resources fulfilling their sexual desires. Some behaviors are seen in people who are addicted to sex, which include-

Why do some people have sex addiction?

There is no one main reason for sex addiction, nor is there any research about it that tells why sex addiction occurs. Many psychological reasons have been given for this, which include

  • low serotonin and high dopamine levels in the brain
  • Loss of self-control due to disturbances in the frontal regions of the brain
  • Lack of channelling your energy in a healthy way into positive things which can be hobbies, creative work. Meaning channelling your energy in the wrong way
  • Feeling social isolation and loneliness.

How to deal with sex addiction

1 Try to calm your mind

Dr. Ritu Sethi says that activities like meditation can help you control your impulses and reduce stress. Physical activity is a great way to reduce stress, which can also reduce your addiction.

2 Create boundaries from triggers

You need to understand which situations, people or feelings trigger your sex addiction behaviour and develop strategies to avoid or manage them. Try to create boundaries around whatever triggers you.

3 Get help from friends and family

Share your journey with trusted friends and family members who can support you and keep you accountable. Because at this time you need someone who understands you and helps you stay on the path.

4 Channelize your time into the right things

Create a schedule for yourself that includes time for therapy, exercise, and other healthy activities. Engage in hobbies and activities that you enjoy and that can distract you from sex addiction.
