The final of the World Chess Championship is being played between D Gukesh of India and Ding Liren of China in Singapore.
The 9th game of D Gukesh and China’s Ding Liren was a draw in the final of the World Chess Championship on Thursday. This match was a draw on King vs King, that is, both players had the king piece left. In this match, after 54 moves both players agreed on a draw.
32 year old Chinese Grand Master Liren had won the first match, while 18 year old Indian Grand Master Gukesh had won the third match. The second, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth games were draws. 6 consecutive games were drawn. So far 7 games in the match ended in a draw. After the 9th game was a draw, both the players have 4.5-4.5 points. 7.5 points are needed to win the championship.
Friday (6 December) is a day of rest. After this, both the players will start the match again on Saturday. Now only 5 matches are left in the championship with a prize money of 25 lakh dollars (about Rs 21.14 crore). If the score remains tied after 14 rounds, there will be matches under ‘Faster Time Control’ to decide the winner.
What is King Vs King Draw? When during a chess match only the kings of both players remain on the chess board, it is called a king versus king draw. In such a situation, there are no chances for any one player to win.
Gukesh opened Catalan, Liren looked under time pressure Gukesh played the Catalan opening with the white pieces. Here too Liren took a lot of time to deal with the opening. While Gukesh took 15 minutes in the first 14 moves. Whereas Liren took 50 minutes. In the middle game, Gukesh got a chance to put pressure on Liren in the 20th move, but Liren did not allow Gukesh to take advantage with his best moves.
At one point Liren was behind by 30 minutes, but despite the time pressure, he made the right moves and brought the match to par. During this time Gukesh utilized his extra time. In the 23rd move he lagged behind Liren in terms of time. After the 24th move it was decided that the game would be a draw and in the end it happened.
