Abuja: A stampede broke out in Nigeria’s capital Abuja as a large number of people gathered to collect food items distributed by a local church on the occasion of Christmas. Giving information about this on Saturday, the police said that 10 people including 4 children died tragically in the stampede. Eyewitnesses said that dozens of people were trying to enter the church premises at around 4 am, long before the items were distributed, and a crowd had gathered at one of the gates at that time. He told that some people were waiting since last night.
Church cancels charity event after stampede
Giving details of the incident, police spokesperson Josephine Adeh said in a statement that the stampede took place in the early morning at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, a posh area of Abuja. He said that more than a thousand people have been evacuated from the church. In the viral video of the incident, it is seen that dead bodies are lying on the ground and people are screaming for help. Adeh said some of the injured have been treated and released, while others are undergoing treatment. The church canceled the charity event after the incident, with sacks of rice and other items still inside.
Last week also children were killed in a stampede
It is the second such stampede in Africa’s most populous country in a week as local organizations, churches and members of the public organize events to raise donations ahead of Christmas.
