The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has registered a case against one of its own assistant directors. In fact, on August 7, 2024, ED Assistant Director Sandeep Singh was caught by CBI Mumbai in New Delhi with Rs 20 lakh in cash. According to the information, Sandeep Singh had allegedly extorted this Rs 20 lakh from a person by promising to help ED in its investigation. The ED has said that taking immediate cognizance of the matter, the ED, following the policy of zero tolerance towards corruption, has initiated criminal proceedings against the accused Sandeep Singh under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA).

ED has said that ECIR has been registered against the accused officer and a search operation has been conducted at the officer’s house under the provisions of PMLA. ED and CBI have also conducted a joint search operation at Sandeep Singh’s office. Apart from this, action has also been initiated to immediately suspend the accused officer and send him back from ED to his original department.

What was the whole matter?

Actually, ED was conducting money laundering investigation against some organizations on the basis of several FIRs of Delhi, Uttarakhand, Bengaluru police. In this case, raids were conducted on 8 August. During this action, ED Assistant Director Sandeep Singh, acting as a search warrant authorized officer, searched the residential premises of a person in Mumbai under investigation. In this case, Sandeep Singh had allegedly accepted bribe to favor the accused.

The accused introduced himself as the investigating officer

According to ED, Sandeep Singh was not the investigating officer in the case in which CBI arrested him. He was involved in the investigation of the case for a limited time. But Sandeep Singh presented himself as the investigating officer.
