After all, in which country are most Indian students studying?

Over 13 lakh Indian students are currently pursuing higher studies abroad, the government told Parliament on Thursday. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh shared this information in the Rajya Sabha in a written response to a question. He was asked whether the government maintains data of overseas students going abroad for studies. In his response, Singh shared country-wise details of Indian students studying in 108 countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Singapore, Russia, Israel and Ukraine.

Foreign Ministry released the data

According to the data shared, currently 13,35,878 Indian students are pursuing higher studies abroad. According to him, this figure was 13,18,955 in 2023 while it was 9,07,404 in 2022. He said, “Out of 13,35,878 Indian students in the current year, 4,27,000 are studying in Canada and 3,37,630 students in America, 8580 in China, eight in Greece, 900 in Israel, 14 in Pakistan and 2510 in Ukraine. “Responding to another question, Singh said that the Government of India is constantly making efforts to increase the number of countries that can provide facilities like visa-free entry travel, visa on arrival to Indians to make travel easier around the world.

What did Kirti Vardhan Singh say?

Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh said, Indian Missions/Posts abroad constantly reach out to Indian students studying abroad and encourage them to register with them or on the Global Rishta Portal. They organize “Welcome Ceremonies” for Indian students travelling abroad for the first time. They brief them on security issues in the host countries. They also advise them to register with the Indian Missions/Posts and stay connected regularly. Indian Missions/Posts use the above method to collect data of Indian students abroad through voluntary registration.
