Amidst the farmers’ protest on the Delhi border, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has given a big statement regarding the Minimum Support Price (MSP). He said in the Rajya Sabha on Friday that the Narendra Modi government will purchase all agricultural produce at the minimum support price. In the Upper House, Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Chauhan gave this assurance to the farmers during the Question Hour while answering supplementary questions on the issue of Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Every crop will be purchased at minimum support price

Shivraj gave this assurance on a day when farmers are planning to march to Delhi with their demands. Chouhan told the House, “I want to assure the House through you (the Speaker) that all the produce of the farmers will be purchased at the minimum support price.” This is Modi government and it is guaranteed to fulfill Modi’s guarantees. ”He said, ”When our friends on the other side were in power, they had said on record that they could not accept the recommendations of the MS Swaminathan Commission, especially the issue of giving 50 per cent more than the cost of produce. I have the record.” Chauhan cited former Minister of State for Agriculture Kantilal Bhuria, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and KV Thomas in support of his claim.

Chairman Dhankhar asked for evidence

Following Shivraj’s claim, Upper House Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar asked him to table documents to corroborate his claim. Chauhan agreed to this. “They (the previous UPA government) never respected the farmers and never seriously considered the farmers’ demands for remunerative prices,” the minister claimed. I want to assure the House through you that from 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to calculate the minimum support price by giving 50 percent profit to the farmers on the cost of production.

Government is already giving remunerative prices to farmers

Shivraj Singh also claimed that the Modi government is already giving remunerative prices to farmers. Chauhan said that paddy, wheat, jowar and soybean are being purchased at a price 50 percent more than the cost of production since three years ago. He also cited export duties and interference in changing prices when commodity rates fall. (Input- PTI language)
