It was just a coincidence that acting as a profession
TV and Bollywood actress Smita Bansal has millions of fans on TV and social sites. Smita herself had never thought that she would become an actress. She was preparing for medical entrance. In between she dropped the entrance for a year. Meanwhile she came to Mumbai to stay with a relative. There was an acting lab near her house. One day in the course of conversation she joined the lab.
The purpose behind this was personality development. But destiny had something else in store. Smita says, ‘As soon as the course was over, I got my first show, Balaji Telefilms’ ‘Itihaas’. I gave the audition test for it and got the role. After that, I told my family. It was only after getting the first role that I decided to take up acting as a profession.’ This is how the journey began.
Struggle to maintain success (Struggle story)
These days Smita Bansal is doing a show on Zee TV- “Bhagyalakshmi”. It is telecast from Monday to Sunday. Smita did not have to struggle to get work. She got work after one or two auditions. She says, ‘To keep doing good work and get good roles, one has to work hard and struggle a lot. Every actor has to do this. A career is not made by doing just one show. For Smita, fitness means being full of energy. There should not be too much lethargy in the body. She said, ‘If you do any work with energy, it means that you are fit. It is not necessary to go to the gym for this. I keep myself very active. My lifestyle is active. I go for walks. I do pranayam as much as possible. I eat home-cooked and healthy food. I take home-cooked food to the shoot as well. I eat outside once or twice a month or while traveling. I drink a lot of water. This is how I keep myself fit.’

Breathing should always be correct. Pranayam is very important. Smita has been suffering from migraine for years. She used Anulom-Vilom as a means to control it. Smita says, ‘The good thing about Pranayam is that it can be done anytime and anywhere. One can cure oneself with it. I do not do any yogasana or Pranayam for weight loss. In fact, Surya Namaskar is helpful in overall fitness.
Story reading with children
Stress is a part of life. Everyone has stress of work, home and children. Smita spends time with her children to relieve herself from stress. Smita says, ‘I spend time with my daughters. I do not spend screen time, but I spend time talking to them. I tell stories to each other.’ Smita and her two daughters are very fond of reading books.
Apart from books, music is their common interest. Despite being from different generations, their choice of songs is almost the same. Smita’s biggest stress buster is listening to music and reading and telling stories with her daughters.
Try to keep yourself busy (Mental wellness)
She does not do anything special to keep her mental health strong. There have been phases in her life when she felt low. Her energy was low. Smita says, ‘At such times, I try to keep myself busy. I try to divert my mind. I take the help of yoga and pranayam to solve any problem.’
Home made food and pani puri
‘I am a vegetarian. I eat homemade food. I like dal-rice, roti-sabzi and I eat the same. Of course I like chaat and pani puri a lot. If someone asks me about my favourite food, I will say pani puri.’
Work life balance
Smita’s experiences show that the guilt of being a working mother can never leave women. This is a part of the life of a working mother. They learn to live with this situation. Her mother was not a working mother. Smita could never give as much time to her children as she gave to her and her brother.
Despite this, she has balanced her work life and family life very well. The day she became a mother, she also decided to work further. She says, ‘I did not want to become a housewife, but always wanted to give priority to the children. I always did the same. I spend festivals and holidays with my children. If I work continuously for 3-4 days, then I spend 1-2 days at home. When I am at home, I only spend time with them. Despite my busy schedule, I definitely attend the parent teacher meetings and functions of the children.
Got full support from family
Family support is very important for working women. She always got a lot of support from her family. She always got support from her husband as well as her in-laws. The atmosphere of her house is very good, due to which she is able to go to work without any stress. She says, ‘My mother-in-law and sister-in-law are very supportive. Note that a good and supportive family environment is very important for the good upbringing of children. That is why I have been able to work without any fear.’
