Kotdwar: A man-eating leopard attacked and killed a boy in Lansdowne area of Pauri district of Uttarakhand. Officials said that the incident took place on Monday evening at around 07:30 pm in Kota village of Rikhnikhal block. They said that the leopard took away 6-year-old Aditya, who had come to his maternal grandparents’ house with his mother on the occasion of Rakshabandhan, from the courtyard of the house. Officials said that Aditya was playing at the time of the incident and his mother and grandmother were also present in the courtyard. They said that when the leopard saw Aditya being taken away in its jaws, they raised an alarm but he ran away towards the forest.
‘Efforts will be made to find a permanent solution’
According to the information given by the officials, Aditya was a resident of Uneri village. He told that after a lot of searching, Aditya’s body was found in the bushes of the forest about one kilometer away from Kota village at around 1.30 am at midnight. He told that after postmortem in Kotdwar on Tuesday, the body was handed over to the family. Lansdowne MLA Dilip Rawat expressed grief over the incident and said that one of the main reasons for migration from the mountainous areas is also the terror of leopards and tigers. He said that he will raise this issue in the assembly session starting from Wednesday in Gairsain and efforts will be made to find a permanent solution to it.
‘There is always a fear of leopards in the area’
Former Pradhan of Uneri village Manendra Singh said that there is always a terror of leopard in the area. He said that leopards and tigers keep attacking scooter and motorcycle riders on the road every day. Divisional Forest Officer of Garhwal Forest Division Swapnil Anirudh said that in view of the leopard’s activities, 8 cameras have been installed in the area and along with this 4 cages are being installed. He said that a team of 15 people has been deployed to catch the leopard. The Divisional Forest Officer said that the family of the deceased child has been given a cheque of 30 percent of the relief amount i.e. Rs 1.8 lakh immediately.
