ISRO’s Proba-3 mission

ISRO, which has raised the flag of its success in space, is going to launch the European Space Agency’s Proba-3 solar mission this evening. This solar mission was to be launched from PSLV-C59 on Wednesday evening but due to a fault in the Proba-3 spacecraft, its launch was postponed yesterday. Now this solar mission is to be launched today at 4.15 pm from Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota.

Project for Onboard Autonomy i.e. Proba-3 consists of two satellites which are connected together. Both will fly together and send the smallest information to Earth to study the outer atmosphere of the Sun.

What is Proba-3 mission?

  • Proba-3 is the third solar mission in the European Space Agency’s Proba series.
  • The special thing is that the first mission of Proba series was also launched by ISRO in 2001.
  • Teams from Spain, Belgium, Poland, Italy and Switzerland have worked for the Proba-3 mission.
  • This has cost about 20 crore euros i.e. about Rs 1,778 crore.
  • It will study the gap formed between the inner corona and outer corona of the Sun.
  • It will be launched from 2 satellites simultaneously. Both the satellites will be at a distance of 150 meters from each other.

Special features of Proba-3 mission-

PROBA-3 is the world’s first precision formation flying satellite, which means not one but two satellites will be launched here. The first is Coronagraph Spacecraft and the second is Occulter Spacecraft. The weight of both of them is 550 kg. After launching both the satellites will separate. These will later be positioned together to form a solar coronagraph. It will study the Sun’s corona in detail. Let us tell you that the outer atmosphere of the Sun is called the Corona of the Sun.
