Reya K Sreedharan, daughter of Brigadier Kaushal Sreedharan, has become a part of the Indian Army. After 11 months of rigorous training, she was appointed as Captain in the army. With this he has done something which had never happened before in India. Reya is the first woman whose father was also in the aviation wing of the army and she has also joined the same wing of the army. Before him, the daughter of no army officer had joined the aviation wing of the army like her father.

Reya has been included in the Southern Command of the Indian Army in Pune. Indian Army said “Following in the footsteps of his father Brigadier Kaushal Sreedharan, Captain Reya K Sreedharan proudly received the prestigious Aviation Wings at a farewell ceremony held at CATS, Nashik. After 11 months of rigorous training, “She became the first second generation female officer to claim inheritance in the Army Aviation Corps and achieve this prestigious feat.”

What is an aviation wing?

Aviation wings are provided to officers of the Indian Army Aviation Corps (AAC). The Indian Army Aviation Corps is a separate wing to support the Army. CATS is the premier flying training institute of the Indian Army under the Army Training Command (ARTRAC), Shimla. Officers are awarded the prestigious ‘Aviation Wing’ after successfully completing the Combat Aviators Course. After this these officers work as pilots of combat helicopters.

The role of women is increasing in the army.

The youngest corps of the Indian Army, the Army Aviation Corps, works to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Army through air transport, surveillance and support during combat operations. According to the Defense Minister, “Army Aviation is undoubtedly a formidable force multiplier, a major war enabler and a vital combat arm of the Indian Army.” The achievement of Captain Reya K Sreedharan is a testament to the growing presence of women excelling in various roles in the Indian Armed Forces.
