The Supreme Court has approved quota within quota among Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Regarding this, the court says that this is not against inequality. A bench of seven judges of the Supreme Court said that the state government can create sub-categories among Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, so that the basic and needy category will get more benefit of reservation. BJP and JDU have welcomed this decision of the court, but NDA ally Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan is not happy with this decision. He has said that his party will appeal against this decision.

Chirag Paswan has said that he does not agree with the Supreme Court’s decision to allow reservation within reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and he will appeal against the Supreme Court’s decision allowing this.

Chirag’s party will appeal in the Supreme Court

Addressing a press conference, according to PTI, Chirag Paswan said that he is in favour of caste census, for which opposition leader Rahul Gandhi is strongly demanding, however he also believes that its results should not be made public. Chirag said that our party will appeal to the Supreme Court requesting it to review its recent decision allowing creamy layer within the 15 percent SC quota.

Chirag said that creamy layer cannot be allowed in SC-ST quota. Allowing creamy layer within SC quota will not uplift the socially marginalized class, which has been a victim of the practice of untouchability. Addressing a press conference on Saturday, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief argued that the main basis for classification of Scheduled Castes is untouchability, which is not mentioned anywhere in the Supreme Court order.

Chirag Paswan clearly said that…

“The Supreme Court has given a verdict on sub-categorisation and I don’t want to say anything that can be seen as contempt of court, but we definitely have objections. Lok Shakti Party (Ram Vilas) will file a review petition in the Supreme Court in this matter. Let me make it clear that when it comes to SC, all these castes have been added to the scheduled category on the basis of untouchability.

He argued, “So the concept of reservation within reservation cannot apply to SCs… Creamy layer can never apply to SCs because its basis is untouchability. But the Supreme Court’s observations do not even mention untouchability. Even today we see a Dalit groom being prevented from riding a horse, even educated SCs from well-off families face untouchability.”
